ClubDesign will be presenting information about graphic design. Specifically, they will be talking about the process of graphic design, from the sketchbook to computer; what is graphic design, from the purpose to the different elements; what you can do with graphic design, from earning a degree to landing a job; and what is AIGA, from the hiring process to getting your foot in the door. This presentation will help people to better understand what graphic design actually is and what is all involved within it. Graphic design isn’t just making things look pretty, it’s a creative, fun, and rewarding career.

BFA Artists’ Reception April 15

An MSUM student art exhibit will be on display through April 25 in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts gallery. A reception for the artists will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 15 in the gallery. It’s free and open to the public. MSUM Art majors display Exhibition in Red Wing MN.

A traveling student art exhibit has recently landed in Red Wing, Minn. The exhibit depicts work generated by students following a month-long intensive art experience in New York City. An article published in The Red Wing Republican Eagle described the exhibition as having captured the experience of New York City through artists’ eyes. Dan Guida of the Red Wing Arts Association was impressed by the diversity. He says, “The show includes a variety of media and themes.” Professor John Volk organized and structured the New York City trip. As part of the curriculum, Volk integrated visits to art galleries, gallery openings and New York City artist studios as well as time to study at the New York Academy of Art. The trip immersed the students into a life of what it is like to be an artist in New York.

For those of you who missed the opportunity to view the work of the seventeen student artists, the occasion has returned. “A New York Experience” will be on display April 9 through May 2 at the Red Wing Arts Association’s Depot Gallery. A public reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. April 10.

John Volk’s NYC Trip

Professor of printmaking, John Volk recently visited New York City to be a visiting critic at the New York Academy of Art. Volk was a part of a committee that explored printmaking as an emphasis for a graduate program. The committee included John Jacob Mayer, the faculty chair person at the NYAA, and Andrew Raftery, a mezzotint printmaker and native to New York City, and Fred Mershimer, acclaimed mezzotint printmaker. They discussed how a printmaking graduate program should be developed and structured. While at the NYAA, Volk also critiqued student’s work and discovered a theme among the pieces. Most of the students’ works depicted landscapes and interior spaces, which Volk found ironic because NYAA is a figurative art school.

While in New York City, Volk also attended the Whitney Biannual. Volk was somewhat disappointed with the selection of works, mostly because the homogenization. “There was a lot of video art that wasn’t up to the caliber that I expected from the Whitney,” he said. “Typically the art of the Whitney biannual expresses the American art scene, but this show felt limited in scope.” Volk also commented on the attendance of the biannual as being very spartan. He remembers in past biannuals the lines stretched around the New York City block to get into the exhibit. This time there were no lines and no wait.

After leaving the boroughs Volk traveled to Philadelphia for a printmaking conference. While there he discussed what printmaking was and joined many panel discussions on the different printmaking processes. As Volk was walking around the conference he noticed a woman sitting at a table holding a mezzotint rocker, so he approached her and asked “do you know how to use that thing?” She said she did and proceeded to show him a demo. Turns out the woman sitting at the table was the foremost mezzotint artist in the United States, Carol Wax.

After returning to Fargo, Volk will integrate a lithography technique he brought back from the Philadelphia conference into his summer lesson plan.

Brad Bachmeier Selected for National Juried Exhibition

Brad Bachmeier, professor of Art Education has had three works juried into the “Raku – Polaroid of Ceramics” national juried exhibit to be held at the Myers Gallery in Santa Ana California this spring. The show opens April 10th and the reception is Saturday, April 17th from 4pm-6pm.

Don Clark’s Quarry series accepted into “X by Y: Digital Art in 2010″ exhibition

Don Clark, Professor, Art & Design, recently had three images juried into “X by Y: Digital Art in 2010,” an international Juried Exhibition at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The images accepted for exhibition are from his Quarry series. The juror for the exhibition was Peter Patchen, a digital artist and chair of Digital Arts at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. The exhibition runs at the A. D. Gallery from March 18-April 7 in Pembroke, North Carolina. Professor Clark has also recently had a photograph from the same series accepted into “Of Memory, Bone & Myth,” a national juried photographic exhibition at the University of North Dakota. The juror for the exhibition was Elijah Gowin, Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas where he has taught photography and digital imaging since 1995 and serves as the Director of Photographic Studies. The exhibition runs during the month of April at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

Zhimin Guan leads Professional Development Workshop

Zhimin Guan has been invited to lead a professional development workshop in Chinese painting and calligraphy. The workshop will take place at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities for Minnesota’s Chinese language teachers.

Zhimin Guan’s invitation to speak on the Individual to Icon exhibition

Zhimin Guan will be invited to talk on the Individual to Icon exhibition at the Plains Art Museum in Fargo. Guan’s paintings featured in the exhibition pay homage to some of his local heroes and display his distinctive oil-on-steel style. The show will be on display until August 26, 2010.
