The Heartland Broadside, a collaborative between local artist is now for sale at the Plains Art Museum, Total Picture Interiors Design Group, The Spirit Room and Zandbroz Variety in Fargo, the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead, the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis. The Broadsid was created by Poet Mark Vinz, Artist Carl Oltvedt, Jerry Richardson, John Volk, and Jennifer Scheur.

Student Sarah Clark wins Award

Sarah Clark, Art major with a graphic design emphasis, has received awards for two of her projects from the American Advertising Federation of North Dakota. Her ‘Natural History Museum of Los Angeles’ and ‘Mira Schendel Brochure’ have received either Silver or Gold ADDY Awards. The award announcement will be made at the annual ADDY Presentation on February 26,2010.

Excellence Scholarhip recipients presented on their artwork

Yesterday evening the excellence scholarship winners for the 2009-10 year gave presentations on their work. This event was held in the Center for Business room 111. There was a great turnout for the six students; almost all seats were filled. The six presenters collaborated to host a reception with refreshments after the presentation. In the library there is an exhibition of their work, “the faces of excellence”. The exhibition will run through Feb. 7. The recipients are: Kaylyn Gerenz (sculpture), Kellie Hames (printmaking), Chelsea Lee (ceramics), Tate Mlady (drawing), Jill Peterson (painting) and Elise Hylden (drawing).

Congratulations to all of you on your scholarships and great job on your presentations!

Lewis Burris at Gallery 4

MSUM ceramics student, Lewis Burris, is the featured artist for the month of February at Gallery 4 in downtown Fargo. There will be an artist reception for him on February 13th from 2-4pm.

Don Clark gets 2nd prize at Mpls Photo Center

An exhibition on display all this month at the Mpls Photo Center invites viewers to ponder what exactly makes a compelling portrait. Minneapolis Institute of Arts curator David Little was asked to jury the show. Little says while the portrait is as old as art itself, photography excels at the task.

No other medium offers such a direct sense of human form and psyche. And no other medium gives us the uncanny sense of being there in time and space with the subject depicted. Our vast collective archives of pictures of friends, family, and acquaintances are proof of this resilient power of the photographic image.

Little whittled down more than 1200 submissions from 232 photographers using a technique that was at once both methodical and instinctive. His first choice amongst them all is the image you see above – “Hugo” by Joseph Holmes. Taking second prize was the work of a Minnesota photographer (and MSUM Art Professor) Don Clark’s “Young Kate in Sheep Fank.”

Garrett Hansen Exhibit in Gallery

Garrett O. Hansen is an associate instructor of photography at Indiana University. His explains about his work, “From August, 2006 – July, 2007 I lived and worked in Dalian, a city of six million in the Manchurian region of China. Throughout my time there I was struck by the density of the city. Despite that feeling of crushing density, I found in my photographs an intense isolation. Perhaps this was due to my own status as a foreigner or, just as likely, to the essential anonymity that goes with being part of a crowd, but in either case my photographs are suffused with a sense of solitude. I did not set out to make images that referenced either isolation or loneliness; I simply want to explore the idea of the individual in the context of the world’s most populous nation. These images are not a definitive statement about who these individuals are or what China is today, they are simply a reflection on what it might mean to be an urban citizen in the new China.”

The exhibition will run from January 12-February 10 in the Rolland Dille Center for the Arts. There will be a reception on Thursday, January 28 from 4-6pm. Afterward, Hansen will be giving a colloquium presentation at 6pm in the Center for Business room 111.

MSUM Alumni, Jescia Hoffman granted an Artist in Residence at MHS

Jescia Hoffman, an alumni of MSUM, graduated in 2008 with a BFA in Art and an Emphasis in Drawing, has been granted an artist in residence by the North Dakota Council of the Arts. She will be working at her former High School, Mandan High School, where she will be teaching painting and printmaking to the beginners and advanced class. Jescia will also work with the students on portraitures and experimental water colors. She will also be working with the Art club in printmaking demonstrations in the community. By joining the Artist residency roster, Jescia and MHS are able to get a grant from the North Dakota council of the Arts to pay for half of Jescia’s teaching Seminar while the school will pay for the remaining half.

Bjorn Anderson Attends Meeting in Anaheim

Bjorn Anderson attended the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America in Anaheim. While there he attended several paper sessions and reconnected with colleagues. He also visited the Getty Villa in Santa Monica and the Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose, where he photographed rare objects for use in Art History classes.
