Arnar Awarded the Max Nanny Prize

Anna Arnar received the Max Nanny Prize for her 2006 article “A Modern Poem’: Stephane Mallarme on the Bvisual, Rhetorical, and Democratic Potentials of the Fin-de-Siecle Newspaper.” The International prize is awarded for the best article appperaing within the previous three years on the subject of word-image relations.

A senior MSUM Art & Design major, Tessie Jones, hands down Miss ND Crown

The newly crowned 2010 Miss North Dakota is MSUM student Katie Ralston, a senior Communications Studies major from Carrington, North Dakota. Her platform will focus on talking with school students about leadership. Last year’s winner was Tessie Jones, a senior MSUM art & Design major.

Megan Eckman, a senior at art major at MSUM wins $5000 from Scholarship

Megan Eckan, a senior art major at MSUM, won $5000 from the Cross Lines Scholarship competition, of which 325 students entered. Eckman is a Fargo High School graduate and the daughter of Richard and Nancy Eckman. She intends to enter graduate school and become a young adult novelist and illustrator. Explaining her drawing, she said: “I was studying Japanese armor at the time and fell in love with their use of lacquered wood and patterned fabric as defense.” The jury that selected the grand prize included representatives from The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Danziger Projects art gallery, and the Italian Cultural Institute along with illustrators and Cross company executives.

BFA exhibition

Alumni, Eric Syvertson’s Solo Debut

Eric Syvertson is having his “Solo Debut” at the Art Rourke Gallery featuring spray paint, charcoal, ink & pastel. The opening reception is on Friday, December 4th. The exhibition runs through January 17th 2010.

Chair, Don Clark to Exhibit in Minneapolis

Don Clark, Professor, Art & Design, recently had three images juried
into the Minneapolis Photo Center Portraits Competition. The
competition received over 1500 entries from 218 entrants from 33
states and 4 countries. Professor Clark was the only person to have
three images accepted in the exhibition. He also won 2nd Prize for
the photograph, “Young Katie in Sheep Fank.” The images accepted for
exhibition are from his project photographing the people, culture and
landscape on the Isle of Harris in Scotland, which were taken while
on sabbatical last year.

The juror for the exhibition was David Little, Curator of Photography
at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The Minneapolis Photo Center
Portrait Exhibition will take place from January 2-31, 2010 in
Minneapolis.

Professor Clark has also had a photograph accepted into the Creative
Quarterly 17 Competition. Professor Clark was a runner up in the
professional photography category with the photograph, “Line
Composition #1.” His image will be included in Creative Quarterly’s
online gallery beginning in December. This image was created in
Italy while on sabbatical.

Student Card Access to the CA Over Thanksgiving Break

Student card access to the CA during the Thanksgiving break is as follows:

Doors will be locked at 12:01 AM (midnight Wednesday, Nov. 25th) andwill open on 12:01 AM (midnight Friday, Nov. 27). In other words, the CA will be closed for 48 hours all day Thursday and Friday. If you are still in the building after midnight from Wednesday night, you will be kicked out.

You should have card access during the rest of the break. Contact Security if you have any problems – 477-2449.
